The Goals of Functional Healthcare...

are to restore optimal function because treating symptoms does not heal; restoring function heals.

Optimize function of your nervous system

Your nervous system regulates and coordinates your body function. Therapies that are particularly effective at optimizing function of your nervous system are chiropractic, applied kinesiology, craniosacral therapy, and acupuncture.

Eliminate infections and toxicities

We are constantly exposed to pesticides, herbicides, plastic residues, air pollutants, metals, and other chemicals limit health. Hidden, sub-clinical infections or their residual effects can limit our health without recognizing the cause or long after the initial, acute infection.

Herbs, herbal tinctures, homeopathic remedies, fasting, detoxification regimens, specialized diets, clinical nutrition, and chelation therapies can help here along with education on how to avoid these poisons and infectious agents.

Optimize your body chemistry

Having the nutrients required for normal body chemistry is essential to your health. Clinical nutrition using diet and nutritional supplements can correct nutrient deficiencies, overcome limitations in metabolism due to genetic predisposition, and help overcome the effects of exposure to toxic agents from the environment.

Teach and coach selfcare

Healthcare alone will never make or keep you healthy. To experience the level of health that you deserve, you have to practice selfcare. We teach strategies and provide tools for selfcare during office visits, through our clinic and Choosing Health: Dr. Force’s Functional Selfcare Workbook, and by making available extensive resources that support your selfcare practice.

Course of Functional Healthcare

Initial consultation, history, and preliminary exams (first visit)

Most of the information leading to diagnosis is gathered at this time. Consultation and history also determine the exams and laboratory tests that need to be done to lead to an accurate differential diagnosis. Accurate and complete history makes sure that the right tests are done and needless tests are not. Requests for records and health questionnaires for systems review are usually arranged.

Exams and lab work (second visit)

The purpose of the second visit is to gather all of the information still needed to accurately diagnose your health status and determine the cause(s) of your health problem(s).

General lab panels give an overview of your health status. The Elements of Health has access to a wide array of specialty lab tests, if indicated.

Report of findings and treatment plan (third visit)

All of the information gathered from consultation, history, physical exams, lab findings, and review of records is compiled for the report of findings.

active care

During report of findings, we determine the best course of care for you. The frequency of care is set until the next re-exam, usually in six weeks.

Active care (~ 2-12 weeks)

Treatment during each visit begins by evaluating your response to treatment from the last visit. Ideally, each visit builds on the last. During every visit you will be tested and treated for any of the factors affecting your nervous system, body chemistry, and emotional well-being. In this way, all three aspects of the triad of health are being addressed and supported. Active care leads you through the process of healing in a consistent and effective manner that produces measurable results on your health.

Active care for most health problems will last from 6-12 weeks, though this period may be longer or shorter depending on the severity, complexity, and chronicity of the health problem we’re working on.

Re-exams (~ 2-6 weeks)

Measuring your results confirms improvement in your health and accomplishment  of goals set during the report of findings. Re-exams also tell us what has worked and what hasn’t; show if we’re done or if more needs to be done.

In some cases, a lack of response to care may indicate the need for more work-up or a referral to another physician for more exam and/or treatment. Often referrals to other physicians supports and complements our continued work together.

Optimal maintenance healthcare (optional; ~ 1-3 month intervals)

Long term maintenance care for your health and well-being is a common sense approach to a higher quality of life.

Anything you want to accomplish and enjoy in life is limited or enhanced by your level of health!

Though maintaining your health is primarily determined by your selfcare,  healthcare is still a vital part of maintenance care.

Long-term maintenance care includes periodic office visits and a yearly physical exam that includes lab work. Office visits are scheduled every 1-3 months.

Frequency depends on the strength of your constitution, health history, and your personal preference for how closely you want your health monitored and supported.

We will be pleased to advise you, but ultimately the type of maintenance care you use is your personal choice. Each office visit will include the methods used during your active care.

Ideally, you will use the tools from the Choosing Health workbook to fine-tune your selfcare between office visits. The optimum approach for follow-up office visits is to bring with you a recent health graph and the results of any recently completed home tests. That provides more information for us to work with together during office visits and improves the quality of your care.

Optimal Maintenance Healthcare As A Means To Vital Aging

Anti-aging therapies don’t work, but vital aging is very possible, even assured with the right focus and discipline.

Clarence Bass is in his 60’s. He tests in the 99th percentile (better than 99%) for fitness in the 20 to 30 year old age group! Paul Bragg, the man who got Jack LaLanne started, died at 93. He was drowned when hit by a boat while surfing in Hawaii. And, Jack LaLannne in his 90’s can lift heavier weights than most men in their 30’s.

Most of what we call age is really just the effect of neglect. Most of what we associate with age can be reversed with the right care and the right discipline. Hormones can be returned to younger levels, body functions can be improved, flexibility, energy, and strength can be built.

What is your functional age? What is your adaptive reserve? How optimum is the function of your body, mind, and spirit? Do you express your health potential?

How well are you able to sense, perceive, and interact with your environment relative to your age? In other words, can you feel, see, and hear to your capacity? Can you experience your environment fully? Does your body have its full facility to enjoy the sensual richness and depth of experience that your environment provides? With what quality do you experience your environment? How vitally can you live each moment? Do you want to consciously take the actions that cause you to live vitally, richly, deeply, and fully?

How long will you live? Knowing this is futile. It is more productive to focus on the quality of life and take actions that ensure you enjoy the highest quality of life possible throughout your lifespan. This is called rectangularization of the survival curve. In this model one is strong and vital until immediately or shortly before death. This model is a sharp contrast to the more common scenario of slow decay and decrease in physical and mental capacities as one ages. The latter scenario may be the more common one, but is not normal. You may be suspecting that the model of vital aging is the stuff of fantasy and wishful thinking, but there is considerable evidence from the scientific community and from observation of exemplary people and even cultures that indicates vital aging is our normal state.

Functional Healthcare, especially when combined with Functional Selfcare, has a unique capacity to improve your overall health in profound ways that tend to keep you vital and functional as you age.
